The golden rule of success in this industry is FAST! When you join a new opportunity, you are excited and filled with vision of what is about to happen. You see yourself on that yacht, in that new house, with bucket loads of money, on the dream vacation, etc. Your belief level is high.

A funny thing happens when you go out into the world and tell people how this will change your life. Some of them believe you and want your new bound enthusiasm for themselves! They join your organization.

Then something happens. First one, then 2, then 3 say no. Your enthusiasm level drops and suddenly no one wants to be part of your dream! The reason, you lost your mojo! For most, this is the end of the road. You quit, or go find another company that will solve the problem.

When I join a new venture, I make a list of people who are interested in making money. Normally I will have around 100 on my list.

Those who express interest are sent to a presentation or three way call and asked to join the team. The result is 2 or 3 new enrolments in the first 72 hours.

What Happens Next

This is the part that will make or break your success in this industry. It is called “Duplication”

You want to inspire your new team members to do what you did. Make a list, call them, and introduce them to the system. Then together you see if it is a fit for them.

They, in turn, find 2 people in 72 hours. Just about all of us can find at least 2 people who will join us in a new venture. You simply go through the numbers until you find them!

One trick to expand your sphere of influence is to ask if they know anyone who may be interested? If you got 3 referrals from each of your 100, you would have 300 hot leads.

Now you have an organization of 6, and you just enrolled 2!

The Third Wave

Now for the BIG MONEY! In my experience, most miss this important bit. Your second level distributors need to do what those you sponsored did! That’s right, we need to get them to expose the business to 100 people in a few days and get 2 in 72 hours each. Still with me. This is simple, but very few do it!

The Final Step

The people you sponsored work 3 levels deep and train their recruits to do the same. Get the machine happening and everyone wins. The best part is that you all make a fortune! Sure it takes time, but cycling through 72 hours will give the following.

Here I am at Sails restaurant overlooking the magnificent Whitsunday Islands. This is truly paradise on earth!

We won this trip, the 4^th with one of the networking companies I represent, purely on business gained from the internet! It is the result of distributors and customers added using some of the techniques I have developed over the last 5 years.

Five years ago, I was considering my future with this company. My income had dwindled to almost nothing and my garage was filling up with product! Something had to change.

As selling my monthly regular order of 6 bottles of a product I could only use one of just wasn’t happening, I decided that even if I lost money on sales, it was better than throwing outdated product away! I put together a web page and started a PPC campaign.

The Myth Of Instant Success

Now, I am not a high flyer with a 7 figure income. If you are looking to make a million by tomorrow morning you can part with your hard earned cash with someone else who is eager to lighten your wallet, not me. One of my reasons for writing this piece is to inform you that the lure of overnight success is an age old tradition by which certain people make a fortune, while almost everyone else ends up as road kill. If you have ventured into investment schemes, internet marketing in a box businesses, or Network Marketing that is purely for profit, you will understand what I am talking about!

I have achieved my success by working with a few individuals, mentoring them over a period of time, and helping them transform their thinking and skills to the point where they earn several thousand dollars a month in residual income, month after month. If that idea interests you, read on. Otherwise, have a nice life!

My Business Background

I wasn’t always an entrepreneur, or independent businessman. Part of my learning process was almost going bankrupt. I worked my way out of that situation. I have been connected with some top flight sales organizations and my one true sales job selling float tank programs, ended in less than a week. I was told I simply wasn’t the type for a sales career. By tracking my journey, you can see if I am someone you resonate with as a future coach or mentor, and if I may have some clues to set you on the path to greater fun and success in life.

My first job was at age 9 as a choir boy at St James’s church in Sydney. This ended when my voice broke. After leaving school, I trained as a telecommunications technician and four years later went on a 3 year world tour photographing steam trains. After that I spent 12 years climbing the corporate ladder, until I started attending personal development seminars and decided this was not my life path.

My First Business Attempt

I quit and lasted on my own for 18 months until the money ran out! Back to corporate for 4 years working with a Pharmaceutical company and developing my own business on the side. My second attempt at financial independence lasted 6 years. This time I conducted seminars all over Australia, worked at various festivals conducting consultations on their lives, and had a great time. At the end of it all I was organization my own events and the money coming in paid for the outstanding bills until there wasn’t enough to go around anymore. I had to get off the wheel.

First Attempts At Network Marketing

When I heard about Network Marketing in 1978 via an Amway visit from a neighbor, I really liked the concept. I joined because I liked the products and during my first career, sold 3 bottles of glass cleaner! No, I didn’t buy a new yacht. My second attempt in 1986 culminated in a meeting at my house where as instructed, I invited all the neighbors to a meeting without telling them what it was. After that, relationships in our close knit community deteriorated rapidly! This was death to MLM as far as I was concerned.

Finally, I Find A Mentor

In 1997, I met someone who answered an ad for one of my seminars. He was an interesting character and agreed to write a forward for my new book, so I kept in touch. Over the next six months, he slowly wore down my resistance to MLM. At Christmas I joined 3 companies he recommended. My real training and learning started from there. One of the original companies paid me $2,821.06 just this week, 11 years after starting the business. The other two are no longer in business.

Something you need to know if you are considering changing from whatever you are doing to a career in Network Marketing or working for yourself is this. It takes time. There are many skills required to run an organisation of thousands of independent workers. You don’t have to know everything to get started, but if you neglect continual improvement in this business, you are likely to fail. I have a very high closing rate when I actually talk to someone, I get nearly all of my leads though promotional activities, so I only talk to interested people, and those I have trained do the same. This has developed step by step over many years.

A Lesson In Network Marketing

Perhaps the biggest lesson I have learned in MLM is that you can only really build one network at a time. For most people, you can only build one line of sponsorship at a time. For years I juggled several organizations, enrolling my recruits in all of them and spending hours deciding which was best. One day, I decided to concentrate on one at a time, and the one I choose prospered. I have done this twice and both return a good income every month.

I have a very clear criteria when selecting what I will do for financial reward. If I can’t see my efforts adding value to the lives of others, I am not interested. I receive many offers to join organizations, and refuse almost all of them, because they don’t fit my criteria. My latest venture I enrolled in 3 years ago, is the best I have been involved with, and something I can wholeheartedly support.

Who Am I looking For?

Once again, if you are still reading, then you are certainly close to the person I am looking for to mentor to success. Remember, I am not very fond of failure, so I am careful who I take on. I don’t charge, and help you generate income. This may seem crazy until you discover that the best way to make a large income is to help others make a large income! On the internet, companies scan the information looking for their trade marks. If I use company names and proprietary products, I come under scrutiny and have to be careful what I say. Is This Where You Are At?

Pretty much everyone these days could use some extra money, and many people have figured out that winning lotto is a strategy that has little chance of success. Even so, billions are gambled on horses, slot machines, and other gambling venues, just look at Las Vegas! Is this really a viable way to create extra income – I think it unlikely. The house always wins, so the more you play, the more you pay!

You may already have a job, and that’s great. It provides a steady income from a reliable source. The challenge here is that most people can only work so many hours and then their income is capped! Some sales organizations cap the earnings of their sales people anyway so as not to embarrass the fat cats that run the company. Trading time for money clearly has its limitations.

Another way to add extra income is to gain more skills. Here time is a factor. Adding a University degree while working can take 5-10 years or more, during which time you get little financial benefit, while paying hefty fees or racking up a huge debt. This is certainly a better option that lotto, but will take many years to recoup the investment.

So here you are, thinking that starting your own business is the way ahead and I agree with you! It was 1986 when the light turned on for me and I realized I wanted more than my corporate job offered.

How I Developed My Own Successful Business

I embarked on a journey of 3 years of intense training in Personal Development, spending over $30,000 in the process. I quit my high paying job, went to India and did some stuff with Native Americans. At the end of the day, the organization I had sunk most of my funds into weren’t interested in having me on their paid team! They were more than happy to use my services and expertise for free! This venture lasted 18 months with me conducting seminars and a few weekends. After selling all my assets, I had to go back and get a JOB!

So much for all the promise and hope I had to set myself up as a guru! I worked for another 4 years and then received a redundancy. With some extra cash, it was time for a second attempt. This time I survived for 6 years before I did my sums and found myself $30,000 in the red! Yes, I took another job, a lowly one this time, and paid it all back in 2 years.

After Years Of Failure, I Finally Crack The Code Of Success!

You guessed it, once again I became redundant. I decided this time I would put my energy into my Network Marketing Business. After all this was the way I paid off the debt so quickly while earning less than $12 an hour in the call centre. It was June 2002 when I made the decision to go full time in this industry.

Seven years later, I earn in excess of $10k every month in commissions, and life is flowing very well.

Like many people, I didn’t really consider this as an option. I started part time and found people just kept purchasing products. I came across many people who wanted a way out of the rat race, and they joined the organization.

Options For Starting Your Own Business

Now let us look at your options for starting your own business.

1. Create your own product. For most of us, this seems ideal. What we don’t understand is the effort it takes to create a product from scratch and market it. Typically a new start up doesn’t even pay a wage for at least 6 months and it can take years to pay off the start-up capital.
2. Purchase a franchise. This can work, providing it is not one of the affordable franchises like lawn mowing or dog grooming. With these you can work long hours and still not return a decent wage. In essence you buy a job! It takes nerves of steel to borrow huge sums of money to purchase a franchise! It is very difficult to find reliable statistics for franchise failure. That’s because most of them are put together by companies selling franchises! One seemingly reliable report suggests that for Franchises started in 1992, 50% were still operating after 4 years and just 30% after 10 years. This sounds about right to me. How many people do you know who have invested heavily in a franchise only to lose their home or end up bankrupt?
3. Buy an existing business. Many have created great success with this method. It requires great skill in business management. You have to purchase the business and this could represent a considerable investment you may not get back. High risk until you really know what you are doing.
4. Affiliate Marketing. All the rage these days. You sell someone else’s product and reap a commission. Now we are getting down to low cost businesses. It doesn’t cost much do get this happening. You simply build a list of interested people and sell products. What they don’t tell you is that a few people are making most of the money in this area. They prelaunch products between the group and everyone else gets the crumbs. Affiliate marketing can pay quite well.
5. Network Marketing. I hope the alarm bells aren’t ringing. Everyone knows someone who put a lot of effort into one of these businesses and made no money! It is true that most people make very little money, but who do you know that lost even $10,000 in a Network Marketing business? The upside is that it is very low risk. Treated as a business, you can get an amazing return on investment. There is one major advantage of this business model over the others. It has leverage.

My Choice For A Successful Business

OK, are you still with me. You can get a small income doing some part time work, affiliate marketing or operating a franchise. Understand how Network Marketing works, and you can create a large residual income where eventually, you work very small hours for big income. I know because I have done it!

Why This Is My Preferred Option?

The answer is LEVERAGE! This one work changed my whole life. Simply put, if you do an hours work and get a fixed return, you are NOT leveraging your time. Work at McDonalds for one hour flipping burgers and receive $6-12 depending where you live. That is all you are ever going to get. With network marketing you build a whole team of people doing what you do. With 20 team members you have 20 times the return on your hour’s work. With 200, you receive 200 times the return. Imagine having 2,000 or more. So you put in 1 hour and your other 2,000 people put in an hour. Everyone enrolls one person and your organization grows by 2,000! This way you do the same amount of work receiving huge rewards. Network Marketing has a formula to provide this type of income. Stick with it and you can experience it too! I have established several Network Marketing business that now run on autopilot. I do very little and keep receiving a great income. One pays $2,000 a month and all I do is place my $150 monthly order! I have had a cheque every month for over 10 years.

Robert Kiyosaki taught this to me back in 1988. It took me a long time to really understand what he was talking about. Simply put, you sell a lot of items at a small profit and this results in a huge income! This in essence is what network marketing is all about. You make a small margin on product sales, and build your organization. When your team gets large enough, you are paid handsomely.

I Had No Intention Of Starting This Type Of Business.

The reason I became involved in this industry was because someone kept at me. We worked out a way to leverage my resources without spending any money and I started receiving cheques. They kept coming month after month. 11 years later I earn over $3,000 a month from that first company. It all comes from one sales letter! I am now a believer. I have received 20 free trips to various places, and been on top achievers lists in several companies. This is a wonderful industry full of wonderful caring people.

I urge you to consider this option and give it your full attention. From here on I am explaining what you should be looking for in a Network Marketing business and why I chose my current main company.

Criteria One – An expanding Market.

Tim Sales is someone everyone in the MLM industry knows about. His best selling video, “Brilliant Compensation” is seen as a bible for the industry. Tim emphasizes that for long term success you need to find an expanding market. Some years ago I interviewed Paul Zane Pilzer, guru to several US presidents and acknowledged futurist. He predicts future trends and believes that wellness, or preventive medicine, will be the next trillion dollar industry. That was a few years ago and you don’t have to look too far to see that this is true. For me, any business I join must make a difference in people’s lives. When this happens you get loyal team members and they feel in it is their duty to tell others. Wellness is ideal!

My team leaders stick with the program because, like me, they feel a sense of purpose and an ability to contribute to humanity. Survey’s of top business people suggest the ability to make positive change in the world is the number one positive motivator. If you had unlimited funds, what would you wish to do with your life? We get to see lives changed for the better daily, and we get paid for it.

Now wellness is still a very broad area. As you may be aware, there are hundreds of companies offering wellness products using network marketing. You could be forgiven for being totally confused. So how do you select the Wellness Company to join?

Criteria 2 – Unique Technology

Without a doubt, every company has at least one product they heavily promote. This product has a great story backed by testimonials and sometimes great science. There are juices. Pills and powders, all manner of supplements plus many machines. For me personally, I cam into this industry through detoxification. Removing toxins from your body often provides the fastest results. This is what you are looking for – a product which can make a difference in a short time. Most people are looking for help with their health. They are skeptical and if they don’t get a result quickly they move on to the next product. Everyone makes crazy claims. When you have a product that can back up the claims with results, you are on a winner.

For the last 3 years, I have been promoting Activated Liquid Zeolite. In my opinion, this is the Rolls Royce of detox. By capturing toxins at the cellular level, it penetrates the body to a greater level than any other product I have encountered. You only have to do a search on Google for zeolite stories to see that many people report positive results. Clearly if you tell enough people about this product, your business will thrive. Again there are many very good products. This one is very special.

Criteria 3 – Can You Make Money?

It is all well and good to have something people want, but in the end, you go into business to make money! Finances are important. Activated Liquid Zeolite provides you with up to 50% commission on the first order of new distributors. This is one of the highest in the industry and means even if your new people only order once, you make a profit from them! When the people you enrolled bring in others, you receive additional commission. Join at the premier level, and you receive another level of enrolment bonus. While we cannot make guarantees on income, enrolling just 5 people in a month can easily generate $1,000US in commissions. This means the possibility of recouping your investment very quickly. Several of my team have received monthly bonuses of $3-6,000 before the end of their first year. These are not high fliers, just honest workers who make consistent effort.

At the top end of the plan there are growth bonuses which really sweeten your commission payments. Already several people are in the million dollar a year plus category, so it is possible to make unreasonable income in this business. Compared to other Network Marketing companies I have been involved with, I can unreservedly recommend this pay plan.

Criteria 4 – What Do You Have To Do?

Our approach isn’t for everyone. We believe that leading with products is the way to go. Along the way, we always mention the business aspect. We use a powerful combination of conference calls, educational Cds, article marketing, and advertising to make contact with those interested in having a healthier life. It is an approach that has 3 or 4 team members in the top 10 enroller list every month. We dominate this list using the methods we teach our team members.

Having experienced the ups and downs of both MLM and the Internet, John has collected a powerful arsenal of techniques that work to supply a constant stream of new customers and business associates for any business. In my 10 years of Network Marketing, I have been involved with a variety of companies. First I want to state that product is king! If you don’t have a unique product to work with that excites people and offers real benefits, it is very difficult to create a real “buzz” through word of mouth advertising, the foundation of successful growth.

When it comes to growing your business, and encouraging your team to build a residual income, the structure of the compensation plan can have a huge influence on your income and that of your team. It can affect the ability of your group to work as a team or as individuals.

Why this is important.

I have stated in other articles that the purpose of business is to make money. Now I know there are many other motivations for promoting products. Indeed, I will only look at companies that offer technology with a unique property and provide real value way beyond what people pay for it. The product must have some sort of exclusivity, so it will last a long time without significant competition. After all, I am involved in companies with up to 20 years existence and it takes time to build a huge income.

Given that we have such a technology, for business builders, the pay plan really affects how we structure the business.

Fast Start Bonus.

The first aspect is an enrollment bonus. This pays you for introducing new people into the business. They can be new business builders, or regular customers who want the best price. Realistically, if you MLM company doesn’t allow you to earn 25% or more of pack cost on a new enrollee, I would leave it alone! This is money to compensate you for advertising, phoning, preparing marketing material, etc. It takes a lot of work to find new recruits. Many run out of investment money simply because the return on their recruiting efforts isn’t enough to break even. The ideal starter pack is one that consists of any of the company products. Many companies package their products. They want to sell items with higher margins and so they bundle them with their unique products in an effort to move more inventory of less popular products. My experience with marketing is that it is much easier to start with a single killer product and then expand to others once your prospect has experienced the benefits of the main product. As their income grows, they will need to maintain a monthly autoship. Here is a great place to try different products. Bundled products make it harder to recruit new team members and regular customers. Trust mw on this, the MLM company is the main beneficiary! Make sure you have a flexible and high paying fast start plan.

What about the back end?

For long term passive income, you need to build a large organisation. This is the part that pays you month after month, whether you recruit new team members and customers or not. When we build a business, we will find a number of people willing to put the time and effort to build a residual income. Everyone else is really a product user, no matter how much they talk about building a business. As a leader, you want to assist your business builders to gain income fast so they stay around for the long term. I have lost so many people who wanted to build a large income and quit because they simply didn’t cover their regular product cost. Although in reality all plans are complicated, there are a few basic considerations.

As the income of your down line members grows, what happens to your income? Does it increase or decrease?

I know this sounds like madness. Most organisations have different levels of leadership. Many offer “infinity bonuses”. These look very attractive, but what happens is that when someone below you reaches the same level as you, the swallow up all or part of your infinity bonus. After all, the company can’t pay this huge amount to everyone. One organisation I have built pays 6% to the first leader, 4% to the second and 2% to the third. If your organisation take off and you have 3 leaders vertically under you, from there on you get 0% infinity bonus! Watch out, it can happen to you. Imagine having 3 leaders on your first three levels. You could have 1,000,000 GV and get nothing! It happens. You want a plan where developing leaders has no effect on your personal income. In this case volume bonuses, where you receive extra based on your overall volume, are a better deal. I want to encourage my leaders to build a huge business. I won’t do this if it cuts off my income. This has happened to me!

Binary or matrix. These usually pay on volume divided between two lines. You can allocate your recruits to your left or right side. In some cases, you can place new recruits anywhere in your organisation. Often pay comes when certain volume levels are reached on both legs. Most people never make any money with this. They never build a substantial second leg. The get $0! The company relies on slippage. If everyone played out the plan properly, your MLM company would go broke! Mathematically, it is unsustainable, except of course, most people don’t make any money! This swells company profits. My advice – stay away from binary plans.

Step-Breakaway. This is the original type of MLM plan. At the start, you earn great commissions on your whole group. As volume increases, your income increases until…someone builds a substantial business and they break away from your volume. As their volume doesn’t count for override bonuses any more, your income can crash by 50% o0r more overnight – just for helping someone be successful. This happened to me. I lost interest in a company for years as a result. If you will join this type of organisation, enrol everyone on your front line and don’t place people under them. This will maximise your income, although it doesn’t encourage your team unless you have a killer advertising plan.

The best plan.

In my opinion, you want a plan that pays up to 10% on the first level for new distributors, and then moves that number down in levels as your organisation grows. That means it is in your interest to enrol product users on your lowest level, benefiting all your business builders and yourself as well. Everyone wins. When your leaders reach new levels, you don’t lose anything, so you can fully encourage them without risk of losing money yourself.

Prospecting Isn’t The Only Important Task In Building Your MLM Business.

If you have spent any time in Network Marketing, you will know that the number one challenge facing all of us is finding people to talk to! Solutions range from the 3 foot rule where you hit on everyone who comes near you to attraction marketing and, of course, my MLM Customer Acquisition System. I have certainly spent thousands of hours on various trainings and an enormous quantity of cash learning how to find and recruit people into my businesses. The question is, once you have a fish on the line – what then? Recently I was asked to detail my methods in an in depth interview by Roslyn Ashtee.
