Over the years, I have trained many people, some were very successful, and some were not. There are principles that determine whether you will achieve the dizzy heights of success, or become MLM road kill.
Our Modern World
In 2010, there are definite shifts in our industry. People lead busy lives, filled by all manner of sensory input and demands. It is as if we have lost our way. Once upon a time families had a single income earner, while the other partner took care of the domestic chores. That meant lots of time for the family, to attend meetings, visit the cinema, etc. Well that’s changed. Now most families have 2 people working full time just to keep ahead. Kids are demanding to be taken to a continuous stream of activities. It is little wonder we are burnt out, and developing yet another income stream or achieving our dreams is put on the back burner.
It is a vicious cycle fuelled by rising mortgage costs, and domination by a few companies including banks, supermarkets and auto companies. Let’s face it, it costs a lot just to pay the bills these days. We are trapped. Into this mix comes you, with your promise of time freedom. They want it, but don’t have the energy or time to do it. In our instant gratification age, if it doesn’t work in a few weeks, they are off to play golf or try something else! Families are demanding they spend at least some time at home. The pressure grows.
They need a clear pathway to success. One they can follow, with tangible results. After all if you believed enrolling 2 people a month for a year and then helping them do the same would net you $10,000 a month for the rest of your life, you might be prepared to sacrifice a few things to get that!
What It Takes To Transform Your Life
I know you have probably heard it all before, most people won’t put in enough effort to create momentum. The trick is not to let that fact stop you, as there are millions who are prepared to put in the effort if only they believed they could get the results! Your job is to find them, inspire them and then give them a track to run on. Celebrate every success along the way, and keep inspiring them until it all happens.
I have been in this industry for 13 years, when I started I was a reluctant recruit who got caught up in hype at a meeting and signed on the dotted line for over $1,000 for 3 business centres and a box of oil additives! After many months of struggle, I did eventually get my money back and even though I enrolled a bunch of people, I barely made a profit! My sponsor was really keen to get me making money, and kept with me in those early months. We attended markets and fairs, and I organized booths at my own events. Part of my show was a series of lectures, and my friend did a number of presentations. After the talks people would crowd around the stand and we sold heaps of product. The business slowly built up. As time moved on, it was clear there was more interest in nutrition than saving money on fuel, so gradually the original business dropped away in favour of the nutritional companies I had joined at the same time.
Unlike those who make the big money, I have built my organisations using a cust0mer approach, manipulating the payplan to my best advantage. While it has served me well, it has its limitations. The main one being a lack of time freedom. Servicing customers properly takes time, and servicing business builders takes even more time. If you look at my sponsor, he spent a year or two visiting various parts of the country, doing the talks, and helping with enrolments.
I really want you to understand how important it is to stick with your new recruits and work with them until they are independent. My original sponsor was upset when I joined a company where he was not my upline, told me I was a traitor, and so I moved on. I grew up! Now I am a leader in my own right, and I don’t take orders from anyone. Still I am very grateful for the support in those early days, and can see how crucial it could be to your long term success.
A Little Of My Progression.
My background is that of a technician with a distain for sales people. Throughout my corporate life I battled with unrealistic promises from sales people and my department having to deliver as best we could. Selling is something I had to learn. Although I was responsible for recruiting stalls and lecturers for my Festivals, this didn’t come easy, and eventually I stopped them because I was sick of dealing with some of the stall holders. When I started MLM, all I could do was point people in the direction of my sponsor, and let him go to work. I still receive a monthly income from the first recruit who was a stall holder. She is now a good friend. We handed out flyers for products at every event we attended, and soon people started calling me to purchase product. At first this was a bit tricky, but my lack of skill couldn’t turn them off as they had already decided to buy. I started selling product and signing people up! My confidence grew. Pretty soon I was earning a decent income, over $1,000 a month.
Next, I started running home meetings for people and they went great. We would get 3 or 4 people together and talk about nutrition and they all joined up or purchased product. I would travel further and further to do these talks, and eventually the company asked me to run their meetings in Canberra and Newcastle. Business continued to slowly grow. I am still one of the top 3 enrollers for that company month after month, and I Still get over $1,000 a month in commission some 13 years later.
Temptation Strikes.
My sponsor believed in multiple MLMs, a somewhat fatal mistake as most people simply don’t have enough resources for more than one. This argument rages forever. Network Marketing Companies and your up line will encourage you to focus on one business – theirs! It is hard enough to build one huge organisation, so there is some truth in this, but multiple income streams are a good idea too! It is a safety net, particularly if, like me, you make it your full time pursuit. Another new MLM appeared and I was marched off by my sponsor to the launch, where I parted with $49 to join.
This business took off, with some of my team joining. One of them is still busy building this business 11 years later, and it pays me $700-$1,000 a month even today. At its height I was earning around $3,000 a month. There have been several other businesses along the way and two others have provided an even higher monthly cheque for a while.
Serious Business Building
All of the information in this article is to demonstrate a point. I still believe in Network Marketing, and earn all my income from it right now. I no longer believe in quitting your job and diving headlong with no other income stream, at least until you get established. You really don’t need that pressure, and it will lead you to do things the wrong way. After 13 years, I have come around to what the top producers say, it is the number of people enrolling that counts, not how many customers you have! In reality, you only need 2 or 3 people like me. Then you help them find 2 or 3 and work that down. Do this quickly enough and your organisation will start to grow exponentially. I am compiling some great training and mentoring to enable you to do just that. Expect to see a fast start training system here very soon! I want to help you achieve that 6 or 7 figure income. It is a matter of whether you trust me to be your guide and join my team!

Hi Curt,
We all move around with our businesses to find the right home! I appreciate your comments and will look into WhenMagazine.com Best of luck with your ventures.
John,
I can really relate to your post, as I am dabbling in NM, but have had a tough go of it so far. What the so-called upline superstars tell you is not what seems to work for everyone. It can get very frustrating to say the least. I have several other businesses that support my family so I am fine, but NM does intrigue me, it’s just a tough sell to people.
